Marketing
We have been learning quite a bit about marketing and PR here at Custom Upcycling. With a new small business we have found that it is imperative to find a way to get your voice out. Recently, I have been reading the book, "The Marketing Playbook" by John Zagula and Richard Tong. It outlines the 5 basic "plays" of marketing and how a company can choose one at it work successfully for their business or not. They have outlined basic marketing techniques into 5 easy to read strategies that actually make sense. Once you understand them, it is fun to watch large corporations and how they use their plays for marketing their company (for instance, Clorox is perpetually in a "drag race" with competition it seems). They even have some tips for small "startups" that we have been trying to incorporate into our marketing plans for Custom Upcycling. If there is anything you would like to see from Custom Upcycling, don't hesitate to let us know!

Inspiration or Desperation
Within the last few years, I personally have noticed an explosion of entrepreneurial endeavors come to be. Several of my personal friends have started their own businesses, possibly driven by the new opportunities that the rite of passage graduation affords them, or possibly out of choice of options this current job market affords our generation.
I have been trying to figure out what it is about this current position within society that is creating such a flourish of new entrepreneurial start ups. One aspect is that the current job market has let our generation down in the sense that it is not opening up to allow for new opportunity for us. The baby boomers who should be retiring are feeling their retirement funds pinched. They are holding onto the upper rungs of their career latter. This in turn slows down impending promotions and the eventual cycle of the entry level position opening. With no new opportunity, many have returned to the same jobs that got them through college, or possibly a job they had throughout high school. (Isn't that something for encouragement- 4 years of schooling, a mountain of debt and you're still making the same $9/hr you were making in high school!)
Another thought is that our generation has always been told we can make a positive change in our lives if we choose to. Yes, we were coddled and told everything we did was so lovely and just so unique and brilliant- however, this breeds a sense of empowerment. We have been brought up to believe that if we are unhappy with our options given to us, we can be creative to find ourselves a better solution. In the "real world" our endeavors may succeed or fail, but there is no success without an attempt.
I came upon this quote today from Jim Rohn, "we generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation." It is entirely possible that it may actually be both. Custom Upcycling was started as a side project that fed passion and a craving for design and creativity. The current job market makes it a viable solution for gainful employment while bettering oneself and looking to the future. With that, I give you Custom Upcycling. Sustainable Lifestyle Products. Made of post-consumer and post-industrial waste sourced from Crystal Lake, IL; made with care in Evanston, IL. Always evolving and changing.
